The worst customer service.
They have the worst support and customer service that I have seen.

I ordered Dynamic Cloud Server from them and for FOUR days they were unable to make it work! I sent them several emails, made a call - NO results, NO responses, NO excuses, NO explanation. It is unbelievable.

Terrible...you have been warned..
I cannot believe 1and1 is on the list of the top best hosts. Is webhostinggeeks getting paid to list them? There are so many terrible things said about 1and1 and I just experienced it myself. These guys make cancellation extremely difficult (good luck cancelling their services!) and they are known to bill credit cards long after a customer terminates services. They use deceptive mechanisms to re-bill you. I cancelled my credit card because they would not cancel my services with them despite me calling them and repeatedly telling them. So I started getting invoices in my email that my credit card was declined, and of course I ignored them (no way in hell they get my current CC#). 2 weeks ago, I got anohter invoice stating I owe fees. But again, I ignore it. So guess what they do? They send me a PDF invoice for a CREDIT to pay me 22.00 for a "refund". They will credit the refund to my credit card on file. Of course they just want my CC so they can REBILL me!!!

Don't waste your money guys..
We have been with this company for 4 months now and each month the server goes down for unknown reasons.

i have spent more time on the phone with their tech support who to be quite frank don't know their arse from their elbows, i kid you not.

my 15 year old son knows more about servers than these twats do.

i have spent too much money on the phone to them.don't be fooled by what BS they tell you.

stear well clear of this company as their servers are total crap.

their dedicated server support is located in the usa but if you have a problem that involves server re-imaging then they transfer your quiery to their german office which after a couple of days they seem to know nothing about when you phone them for an update.

complete waste of time.

why these companies are allowed to be in business is totally beyond me.

they should be ashamed of themselves.

***WARNING***

DO NOT HOST HERE!!!!!!!!

UNBELIEVABLE.

Besides the customer service being fair, AT BEST, and the uptime being OK, AT BEST- they don't stop there at giving you a bad experience.

Whereas most hosting companies let domains you do not want simply lapse- this one auto renews for you and then sends a COLLECTIONS AGENCY after you if you do not pay.

If you think you're saving something, read the fine print.

You would probably not be allowed to print what I would like to say about 1and1. Don't bother to email complaints@1and1.com about billing when they shut down your site for three weeks due to their own billing server 500 error as it is the same office. Some of their support people are good but mostly from foreign. Too bad they did not outsource their billing. P.S. don't try to upload anything through PhP Admin.

I only use them for domain purchases, and they were cheap and pretty swift in having the domains ready for me so I could switch DNS, etc. Until last week, that is. It took them nearly 72 hours to have my domains ready. Yes, nearly 72 HOURS! What's more, they claimed that I purchased the domains on Saturday evening when I had actually purchased them on Friday afternoon (I even had to send them the email proving this!).

Now, I am having dns issues (yes, I'm not a monkey, and I know what I am doing.). This morning, I was able to successfully update my site. An hour later, it's no longer accessible. Pinging the domain, I see it's back to using their ip address. When I go into control panel to check the DNS, it's grayed out and not accessible.

Oh, and customer service? What customer service? All you get is some rude offshore call center guy or gal on a phone that will tell you when you bought the domains (with incorrect information, mind you), and the standard "you have to wait 24 hours blah blah blah.." when you have already waited that amount of time. when I see support, I'd like to get it from somebody who knows what they are talking about.

They are joke. I'd rather pay full price for my domains and get them promptly. Never again will I buy another single product from these guys.

I agree with the other user about cancellation as well. When you sign-up, the auto-renewal is turned on by default. The only way I was able to find how to turn in off was to go into the FAQ and do a search. Normally, this sort of stuff is available for access in your MyAccount area (their MyAccount area is very poor in terms of usability - yes, I am a ui designer).

All is ok with 1and1 until you need to talk to them.. or even worse cancel your contract. They will renew your account, then tell you your cc or other payment method is no longer valid. But they won't now let you cancel, as they have renewed your for the next year.

You can only cancel online, you can only make payment on line they won't take payment on the telephone.

Also, if you want to cancel, you will need to send a letter with photo copies of your signature.

They are very unhelpful and I wouldn't use them again...

We were customers of 1&1 Internet for over a year using first managed and then unmanaged dedicated hosting services they provide. The first thing we noticed was the problems with our server regularly going down for no particular reason. We needed quite a special setup for our projects to operate, so we decided that this may be the reason for the unexpected faults. As a result we switched to unmanaged solution, where we were in the position to set up all things the way we wanted and believed to be most stable for our needs. This, however, did not solve the problems. Our server kept going down for no particular reason, but, possibly this time the faults were more intermittent. After some two months trying to figure out what could be the reason for this, we got completely clueless. Thus, after careful consideration we decided to switch to Leaseweb, a dutch dedicated hosting provider. In a week, we had our new server set up with most services moved to the machine. It took some time to transfer some of the domains, but in about two weeks it was mostly down.

As of now, we've been with Leaseweb for more than half a year, and our server has been up for the same time. No unnecessary reboots, no downtime, nothing. It just works, with the very same setup, same OS, same configuration. In fact, most of the config files were literally copied over from the 1&1 server (except those that included IP specific settings or similar stuff).

In the meantime, we have (unfortunately) left out one of our domains registered with 1&1. We were planning to move it along with the other domains, but it happened to have an out-of-date email address for contact details, and the address is used to send a message with approval code when you're transferring the domain. Surely, we decided to contact 1&1 and ask them to update the information.

Initially, we received a response in about a week asking us to provide security information, etc. Having this and similar stuff done, we finally received a confirmation email from 1&1 saying that the update was completed. A week or so later we requested Leaseweb to transfer the domain and got a reply that a confirmation email was sent to the Admin-C email specified for the domain. We, however, did not receive anything. After checking the domain record we found that it still had the old email address. This was confirmed by the official 1&1 registrar at http://registrar.schlund.info . So we contacted 1&1 support again and requested another transfer. Similarly to the last time, we went through all the usual security checks and again we were said that the transfer was done and it would take a few days to update. This was three weeks ago. As of now, the domain record is still not updated, according to the 1&1's Schlund registrar. Our service and all the dependent projects still remain down. For the moment, we don't see any other option than going for a legal action against 1&1.

Funny, though, we actually got an email asking to complete a survey in regards to the quality of customer support we received. No need to say what was our response, but it doesn't seem to change anything.

Best of luck to you if you're with 1&1 at the moment, but, if I was you, I would run away from them as quick as I can. Though as you can see it's not always easy.

I am very upset with them. They charge your credit card at their discretion and sometimes for amounts you didn't approve of and if you don't always keep money in the account you have on file with them, you will end up paying much much more than their bill because you will get overdrafts. They let you know at the LAST minute that they are about to charge your credit card. They don't give you any other option to pay. They are new and inexperienced. Every review about 1and1 on yelp is negative. Any good review you find, it was most likely written by 1and1.

Still can't believe I found this service provider in a top 10 list. So Here is my review to help other people know what is this company for real.

I have been their customer for 4+ years, I got about 10 domains and one beginner's package.

Horrible customer service. They will always have the reason. Bad communication with customers not letting you know when something happens to your account. They will always argue it is your fault. It is a headache to have to contact them for even a small issue/request.

Problems I had with them over the years:

1- Email not working.

2- Website down.

3- Domain cancel request didn't go through and I got charged another year for it.

4- Someone STOLE one of my domains (to put it for resale @ several thousand dollars) while in the process of transferring it to 1and1, ruining my company main domain (having to get the .net version), they off course didn't care and said it was MY fault.

5- My credit card was expired so my hosting payment didn't go through. They never contacted me about it. I found out when my service was disconnected and they had already sent my $8 bill to a collections agency!! I ended up paying about $50 with all the fees. They said they sent me emails... I received no emails about this, just junk service upgrade offers and newsletters from them. They never called, never sent alerts through the internal messaging system or anything. Once I paid, the service was reconnected about one week later. Ridiculous!!

Hosting service is average, not fast at all. Sometimes takes forever to be able to FTP upload, specially larger files (more than 1.5MB), as the server connection drops constantly. Email is not reliable either.

Be aware that you get what you pay for: they are cheap.

I'm looking forward to move to a different service provider that treats me like a person.

Would definitely not recommend to anyone.

This is a company that is too afraid to let you speak to any member of its management. The company hides behind a single premium rate phone number that takes you to a call centre. Senior management display a clear lack of business acumen, being able simply to run an automated system. They make it difficult to even make payments to them and are clueless about how that should be organised. After they failed to get a payment from my debit card (the first time in many years) they emailed me. So I phoned Billing to discuss the issue (I wanted to pay them) but they told me that it had to be done their way. I said that that was not possible, and also rather odd, since I had no trouble with other internet companies, including 123-Reg. They then responded with an email telling me to call the Call Centre number. I wrote back saying that I had tried that without success and gave them my phone number asking them to call me to resolve the matter. They did not respond. After a while my account was locked, putting client web sites and email accounts into limbo. No specific warning was given that they were about to do that. Not the actions of a responsible or honest company. As I write this, I am waiting for my account to be unlocked. I shall be surprised if they have got round to doing it yet. They only put themselves out BEFORE they get your money.

Their tech support is very good, but the billing team is a nightmare. Do not believe anything they tell you. They haven't a clue and are extremely unhelpful.

There are many other Hosts out there who you should use in preference to these sharks. 1&1 WILL let you down.

The domains I used were hosted by a web design customer. She had 2 domains. A "free" one came with her account - so they charged her for the .com version of her name, and gave her the .net version "free", which means it will come up for auto-renewal, and she will pay because she is clueless.

In short, that is how they do business. At the start, you will be promised large numbers that are meaningless in reality, and then you will be stuck with them for life, and you will pay what they tell you to pay. Mach Schnell!

Too make things worse, my first contact with this company was via the IP addresses in my firewall - I recorded an immense number of script kiddy attacks coming from their server. They don't monitor for abuse - I never got a response to abuse complaints - although Yahoo, for instance, and Sprint IP will take immediate action if their IP spaces are being abused. I have to block the IP addresses of their servers in my htaccess files. (hint - don't just block ONE address if you get hit from 1&1 - block them ALL) That does work. It seems 1&1 has grown their bottom line through the slimiest business practices. If you like to hack other people's machines, get yourself an account at 1&1. Their only concern to to rack up another paying account.

The specs have not been upgraded nor has the price reflected the old specs that have been given. I asked for a price decrease or even a server upgrade instead due to being with oneandone for more than 18 months but its not possible. Either purchase a new package or move host. The BONUS is if you have attached domains to to your account then you must cancel or move these to close the server account package. What load of rubbish! Beware if you have lots of domains moved into your 1& account as you cant cancel server and just continue with existing domains. I`m paying £50 + Vat monthly.

Funny, because I work helpdesk now, and can better appreciate how awesome these techs were, fielding my unusual questions with such skill. They're the reason I'll stay with 1&1. Provided you don't need any type of support for your service, the hosting is ok. Billing, technical support, and customer service are incompetent robots that only reply with form letters and non-applicable information. The cancellation process for their accounts is vague, and difficult, to say the least. Items are hidden in many different location, email verifications are unreliable, response time (along with getting useless responses) was extremely long. My only fault in the cancellation process was not bombarding them with calls and emails to make sure my account was cancelled prior to the (automatic) renewal date. Questioning them about the confirmation email for the cancellation, which I did not receive, netted me blame from them, that it was my fault. End of story? I ended up paying for 6 months, and a late fee to boot, on a service that was cancelled after the 1st time I questioned them about the email verification.

Prices and features are excellent and they always seem to have some kind of special offer that makes them even more affordable. Super fast and incredibly reliable servers. One of my websites went down for a few minutes a couple of weeks ago and that is the 1st outage on any of my sites in several years!

I would not recommend 1&1 for beginners as the control panel is terrible, support is worse and from what I've heard their web builder or whatever you call it is useless, but for web pros that don't need support or beginner tools it's an outstanding value and a host you can trust to keep your website up and available 24/7 as long as YOU know what you're doing.

The services are plentiful but not very useful. And once you get locked into a plan you are stuck with the outdated services. But the Billing department must be run from UK Prisons. Or else they are incredibly incompetent. Either way, it is a real nightmare. I get charges appearing that are not ordered. I've had my sites locked and them leave for the day after they post "illegal" charges. I spend days on getting it cleared up and then they are back again. I'm off to find the love again. Horrific experiences with 1 and 1. If you are looking for quality customer service or expertise in web design don't choose 1 and 1. I have tried to stick it out with 1 and 1 simply due to the time consuming nature of changing, but most recently, it was the last straw. Here are a few of my experiences so that you don't make the same mistake I do. I created a basic website for my business using website builder. I published it, went in to website builder to edit it, and published it again. The project was erased due to a problem on their end (not the only time). When I called customer service to see if there was a backup of my website, they explained that there was a back up, but it was not available to them. ??? After multiple ridiculous errors/actions on 1and 1's part, I have given up and am changing hosting companies. Technically-they are challenged. If you need help with something, you will not find it with them. Last week, I requested to speak to a supervisor, I was put on hold for 30 minutes and eventually gave up. I am now transfering all of my business, but it is time consuming and I wish I didn't have to. Just don't choose 1 and 1, you will regret it as I have.

I have to go into the control panel and power-cycle it to reboot. 1and1's tech support (and sales, billing, and complaints) department claims you have to prove it's their fault the server is crashing before they'll repair or replace a server. These same websites ran for five years on an old FreeBSD box without crashing. You can read about it in my blog at http://1and1hostingproblems.blogspot.com/

Originally I used the 'normal' hosting, and it was painful getting things done correctly. I should note that I would consider myself a 'power user', so I was pushing what should be possible. Trying to get decent support under these circumstances proved virtually impossible.

I have now switched to root servers (to avoid having to deal with customer support), and to be fair I consider the package to be excellent value for money. Also, as a dedicated server user, you get access to a slightly higher calibre of staff. The problem is that trying to contact this small team is very difficult to do.

Worse still, I have now had 3 issues where domains (and the root server) disconnected from the internet. This was due to 'auto triggering' black listing and disconnection. Eventually it turned out that because the server was declaring itself as 'localhost.localhost', it was being treated as a compromised server. Unfortunately this disconnection contributed to my loss of a fairly important customer. Trying to get hold of the right person to deal with the problem was time-consuming and painful. To be fair, if I get this type of problem again,I'd know where to go within 1 and 1 to solve the problem.

The root server provides a Plesk control panel that is more than adequate for my needs, and provided I have connectivity I have no real need to contact the customer support.

With all hosting companies, there is a problem with getting to the correct person to solve a given problem. 1 and 1 is pretty painful with respect to doing that on the phone, BUT their email support is very good as it is completely recorded, and although for complex problems it may take a few days to sort out, the system does work!

As for cancelling domains....this can be messy! Make sure you follow the process to the letter, or it won't happen! Then again, I've had similar issues with other hosting organisations. They are definitely a little over zealous in this area.

Overall, this may not be the best hosting company out there, BUT I now understand how it works, and IT CAN provide the level of service required for a commercial organisation (just sometimes a bit painful). I will continue to use them until someone provides a better alternative.

Do NOT use 1&1. I signed up for a basic account, never recieved any confirmation or information and assumed that the transaction had not gone through. Months later I discovered that 1&1 had been billing me for something I'd never used. I emailed to have my account cancelled. Yet they kept automatically renewing my account and billing me. Then without notifying me they sent my account to a collection agency. It's been a nightmare. Talking to customer service is like talking to robots--completely unhelpful. Stay away!

Wow. one of the worst. These people have NO idea what they are doing. Customer service is a joke, their control panel is MORE of a joke. Run Run Run - do not look back. Actually worse than GoDaddy, which used to be on top of my worst list.

These guys decided to take my domain name while it was not even expired, and make use of the reasonably high google rating for their own SEDO parking company. I can buy my domain back for 3500 euros, but, since they took the domain, my business is nearly dead. These guys steal domain names, then offer a long bureaucratic process involving faxes and fees to extort more money from you.

Avoid like the plague.
